June 2010
Before I made the decision to further my studies in Mara Technology University (UiTM) in Malacca, I kept wondering whether I was well prepared to face all the challenges being a university’s student. But when I looked into my loving mother’s eyes, I knew that she was hoping the best for me. On my registration day, I took my first step with confidence and from that day onwards, I look forward to achieve my goal. A month being a pre-degree student had widely opened my eyes to the university lifestyle which is totally different from my good old school days. Almost all of my friends agreed with me. Little by little I began to like this place.
In UiTM, students do not have the opportunity to get along with the Indians and Chinese as UiTM provides mainly for the Malays and Bumiputras. However, I am glad to gather with all of my friends who come from different states in Malaysia. It is really interesting to learn their dialects, customs and cultures. Two of my college roommates hail from Kelantan. Interestingly, they like to speak in their dialect and leave me in the dark trying hard to figure out their words. Another one of them comes from Malacca. She is a bright and breezy type of girl.
Mr. Naza, a man with an average height that I saw on the day I was interviewed is our program’s coordinator. He is also my lecturer who taught my class Malaysian Study. We received a very warm welcome from him. Every week I could not wait to enter College Study Skills class as it is my favourite subject. It teaches me self-discipline, time management and how to set up goals. Besides that, the lecturer who teaches this subject has an interactive way of attracting her students to give full concentration in class. She is a broad-minded and a positive thinker. Personally, I like her style. In Mr Razif’s Grammar and Computer Literacy classes, however, I normally feel I have butterflies in my stomach. Whenever he enters the class, it will become quiet all of sudden. In my opinion, he is a man of few words and likes the idea of ‘less talk, work more’.
All in all, my class has 30 students and most of them are friendly and easy-going. Every day my class is coloured with laughter and funny jokes. In a very short time frame, I find myself easily getting along with them. When writing about the interesting characters in my class, I must mention Piqa or Mieyo as I love to call her. At the beginning of the month, Mieyo and I always made jokes together and became the noisiest ones in the class. Sometimes both of us would make fun of something just to cheer up the class in the morning. Some of my classmates whose houses are within walking distance from the campus go home on almost every weekend. These lucky people include Mieyo and Amir. I secretly believe that they actually need to go back home to get their laundry done.
In the evening, having a ‘Fish Spa’ at the lake is very common among all pre-degree students. Besides that, we love to take pictures together so that these unrepeated moments can be captured and kept as a token of memory.
In order to have lunch and dinner, all of us have to walk outside of the campus. In the afternoon, I usually go out with my friends to have my lunch while for dinner, instead of eating a pack of Maggie, I prefer to my friend buy me some food or simply eat some biscuits. It is quite tiring walking from the college to the class as it usually takes to walk for twenty-five minutes. Fortunately, my class is air-conditioned and I am really grateful for it.
Of course at the beginning of the month I was relaxed without having to worry any assignment but little by little I started to get busy finishing up all the work before the due dates. Since week 3, I always go to the library to look up for some information regarding on my assignments and I will never put off my work till the next day. It is still at the beginning and every beginning will come to an end. 23rd May 2010 was the beginning of my university days. I have two choices - I can be a successful person or a failure. Since everything is in my hand, I need to be wise in living my days in this university.
Nobody is born to know everything. We have to live and learn. So am I. Right now I am trying to enjoy myself here with all happy-go-lucky friends and lecturers and all assignments that almost make me sick. And learn as much as I can from them.
